My Birthday Wishes For You – A Letter For My Son

We officially have a grown man in the house! Hayden’s 6th birthday was this week and the growth we’ve seen in the last year has been crazy. If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll remember that we saw a lot of new development in Hayden around this time last year. If you’re new to my blog, WELCOME and you can check that post out here. Well, we have seen an even bigger explosion since he started school in August. His talking has really improved and we are seeing more and more signs of him starting to catch up. We still have a long way to go, but any step is a step in the right direction. #justkeepswimming

A prime example is how STOKED he was about his birthday this year. We’ve been talking about it, but we weren’t sure how much he was playing along with us versus genuine excitement. He tiptoed into our room whispering “happy birthday” and it seemed like he was too excited to go back to sleep. It would have been cuter if it happened after the sun came up, but it was still pretty damn cute.

If there is any doubt that this child is mine, he wanted to go to the outlets and get Mexican food, so there’s your proof. This child loves to go shopping and would pick that over a typical kid-approved activity any day. A trip to the grocery store would have REALLY put the shenanigans over the top, but he had a great day regardless. We have seen more growth this year than ever before and we can’t wait to see what this year brings.

As parents, we all have a picture of our children’s futures. We have an idea of who we would like them to be and what we would like them to achieve. Above all, we want them to be happy of course, but we all have a mental picture of what we think that looks like for them. In the spirit of wishes, here are my birthday wishes for my son.

BE BRAVE

My little man, you can accomplish so much with your bravery. The world started out a scary, overwhelming place for you, but you have tackled gigantic obstacles on your terms when you were ready. I have not always been happy to go at your pace, but you have forced me to slow down and appreciate every inch that goes into your footsteps. Life will always bring you challenges, but I hope you continue to harness your bravery and knock them down. Your little life is just beginning, and it is your road to travel. I will follow your lead, and I will be with you every step of the way.

BE GOOD HUMORED

My kindhearted little entertainer, we are just starting to see all the parts of your personality. You are funny, smart, and so much fun to be around. I often hear from others how your smile and laughter brighten up their day. It is infectious and I love to see the happiness you find in the simplest things. One of your favorite sounds is the laughter of others and I hope you never lose that. You leave a bigger impression with your little laugh than you realize. May you always meet life with a sense of humor and unmatched kindness.

BE STRONG

My little brick wall, sometimes your inner strength is a force to be reckoned with (and believe me, I’ve tried!). You already have such courage and determination, and it has carried you so far. The abilities that come so easily to others can be very difficult for you, but you’ve shown time and time again that you can do it! Even when things are scary, you come to them in your own time. Every milestone you have overcome is a testament to you, sweet boy, and I hope you come to understand what a gift your inner strength is. Through your darkest times, may you remember that you can do ANYTHING.

Your strengths are so admirable and I know you are going to be a wonderful man. You show me something new every day and I hope I am showing you how proud I am of all that you are. Happy birthday!
